Idera SQL Check

Using OpenDataSource to Access Remote Data

OpenDataSource is an adhoc alternative to accessing remote data, whether it's another SQL Server or an Excel file. It makes a lot of sense to use it when you want to define the datasource at runtime.

Can you post your script file for these how to videos? It would make it a little easier to run thru the scenarios on our local computers. Thanks.

Jim Flannery on 10/5/2009
Simple, yet may prove very useful.

karim on 10/5/2009
Great advanced features.

Mike Dumais on 10/5/2009
Tried this when trying to access excel file:as in your demo Msg 7403, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLED.4.0" has not been registered.

rajani on 10/5/2009
some knowledge user access

Ahmad Elayyan on 10/5/2009
not clear, and need more clarifications.

I would have liked to see more on setting up the connection string, without integrated security, and particularly with Oracle.

DANIEL SKEFF on 10/5/2009
Good video for one great resource! Thanks!

Stephanie Brown on 10/5/2009
For some reason, this felt rushed where other videos haven't. I can't quite put my finger on why that was. Also, not being a DBA, I'm guessing I'd need to talk to the people who support our server before changing configurations. I didn't understand why the XML fields caused problems either; did I miss something?

mbourgon on 10/5/2009
One other nasty caveat: 64-bit doesn't include the Excel driver.

Mike Salo on 10/5/2009
Did know any of this Thanks.

The screen values blew by too fast to absorb what was being shown. Slow down.

Jon on 10/6/2009
It would be nice to be able to save the demo code for future reference. Great demo!

Christian Bahnsen on 10/7/2009
Interesting. Thanks for the tip regarding Excel.

Steve Culshaw on 10/9/2009
Interesting feature that I can see benefits to One point w.r.t. the video, suggest use the Full Screen option in SSMS so you can see the text, rather than leave half the window showing the Object browser

Tom Stafford on 10/9/2009
Very good video, if you would have closed the object explorer pane on the left you would have been able to see all of the SQL code as it was being talked about.

Very Good

excellent video

I even followed along substituting my file name/ location and felt the gratification at the same time. I am going to try using this with a select into statement.

I had no idea. Now I do!

Nice info. Keep it up

Larry Beals on 12/2/2010
We often generate Excel lists to end users who then add information. This method will be much easier to get back to the database and query additional information.

Russell Tye on 12/12/2010
Very good

Brilliant explanation of a complex topic

michkey on 2/17/2012
well not bad but,it is just 2005

Rob Firth on 2/17/2012
a feature I always forget.

Carol Green on 2/17/2012
Could have collapsed the left hand navigator pane so we could see more of the code.

Neil Abram on 2/17/2012
small hint: you should hid the object viewer so that the t-sql section is more visible

5124CFD2E1 on 2/17/2012
Talk about the different input parameters for this function. Also talk about the differences between opendatasource, openquery, and openrowset. thanks.

John M on 2/17/2012
Presenter: Try to position the query text so that you are not constantly scrolling the window from left to right and back.

R Michael Lacy on 2/17/2012
I'd rate this much higher if you'd include your demo scripts as a download.

Jose Horton on 2/17/2012
Great Precise and Efficient information...

Mick on 2/17/2012
Interesting concept - would love to see more real life uses / examples.

Jeff Moore on 2/20/2012
Hard to see entire commands. Can you open an Excel file without the ACE engine installed?

me on 2/20/2012
like it]!

Edgar Machado on 2/21/2012
Slow down.

Dwight on 2/22/2012
You could have closed the Object Explorer so we could see more of the queries instead of flipping back and forth from the beginning to the end of the line.

idris chambas on 2/22/2012
Great stuff. Well explained.

John O'Sullivan on 2/22/2012
