I'm currently working for FM Global, an industry leading engineering & insurance company, as a DBA. I've done development of large scale applications in languages such as VB, C# and Java. I've worked in SQL Server from the hoary days of 6.0. My nickname at work is the "The Scary DBA." I even have an official name plate with it. I wear it proudly. I was awarded a Microsoft MVP in April of '09.

good training

I would have rated it a 5 if it had gone morwe into detail about the Query Plan objects (unless you have another video that does this)

Paul Bhupal on 9/23/2008
Short but sweet.

Mark Redfern on 9/24/2008
So what do you do next?

Grant Fritchey on 9/24/2008
The idea behind the video was just to put across the basic concept. If you click the author link, there are a ton of other videos that explain a lot of the other operators. The video titled "How to fix a bookmark lookup" gets into methods of actually fixing stuff like table scans and key lookups.

Mark and Richard, There are a ton more videos available from Grant. If you still want to see a video that explains something in more detail, use the "Suggest a Video" link at the top right of this page to let us know what you want.

Thanks, good basic (useful) info.

erick on 9/26/2008
too too short

Diane on 9/29/2008
Would like to see how to determine the "better index"

Great Tip!

Video seems like it was pulled out of a larger video.

Grant Fritchey on 1/16/2009
To 32B941FBF4 (can I call you 32 for short?), Nope 32. It's just a really short video meant to define the operator within an execution plan. From the comments though, more is needed.

suvankar on 5/27/2009
very good

Joe on 7/10/2009
The message table scan has to be avoided was very clear

kin on 9/8/2009
keep up with the good work.

cristobal on 9/18/2009
Nice but what do you do next ?

Olu on 5/13/2010
The explanation about why it does a table scan was just excellent

John Miceli on 5/24/2011
Finishing this out with a couple of example methods to beat the problem would also be helpful.

Table scan doesn't always mean to happen in no-clustered index table. It does happen as well in clustered index in form of clustered index scan operator, that's table scan in table with clustered index on it.

Rene Rodriguez on 11/10/2011
Short, quick and to the point. Perfect.

Steven Robinson on 12/30/2011
Very good insight

Mark on 1/20/2012
I would have prefered an extra minute showing what the "add index" would do for the execution plan
