Introduction to Common Table Expressions

Common Table Expressions (CTE) were added to TSQL as a way to make certain queries easier to define and use. They take a little getting used to, but if you can write a query, you'll 'get' this in no time at all.

a good introduction to CTEs

The audio was popping pretty bad.

Extremely simple..

Was hoping for a little more in-depth...

Steve Harris on 11/4/2009
will you be covering recursive capabilities in a future video

was hoping to watch, firewall off, but... "stream not found" Thanks a lot.

Kasey Wheeler on 11/4/2009
Good, but basic video.

Dennis Allen on 11/4/2009
A little slow paced, though I understand it was done for clarity. I would like to know more about the advantages to using a CTE rather than a sub-query in the FROM clause. I look forward to more presentations about CTEs and places where using them represents a big benefit.

David Leach on 11/4/2009
Wasn't aware of the alternate syntax. Nice extra tool for the box. Thanks, Kathi.

practical use will help explain the purpose of the CTE.

brian taylor on 11/4/2009
too basic to be of much use.

David Burnett on 11/4/2009
overall quality was good however the examples where unrealistic. I understand it was to explain the concept but a little more thought could have made a much better presentation.

Rick Baldwin on 11/4/2009
very good, simple example, easy to follow. Thanks

Don Weigend on 11/4/2009
Although this was a very basic introduction it was very well explained. Nice Job!

Tilahun on 11/4/2009
It is really helpfull topic . I like this vedio. Nice work.

Carl Draves on 11/4/2009
What would be a good use of this. I understand it but a partical example would have been helpful.

Kenneth Wymore on 11/4/2009
It would have been nice to go through the basic example a little faster and then provide a more complex example where a CTE would actually be useful.

alfred on 11/4/2009
ok

Steve Culshaw on 11/5/2009
Good starter on CTE's

Jim Orten on 11/5/2009
presentation could have been better - voice was not natural and relaxed

Bruce Bealer on 11/5/2009
An example of how to use would help.

Tonci on 11/5/2009
Simple, good and to the point. I know in later videos of CTEs, you will explain recursion. I used recursion with stored procedures, but something tells me I should have used CTEs. Good work and thank you.

Excellent introduction, Kathi! I will tell my Intermediate Query class about this video! Keep 'em coming!

Love it.

excellent..

Good Vid

Steve Harris on 9/30/2010
Good basic examples. However, maybe give at least one reason as to why you would use them.

good

Very nicely presented. Can't wait for the follow-up videos. Thanks.
