Introduction to SQL Server XML Schemas, Part 1

This video introduces you to XML schemas and how to work with them in SQL Server. Why do you need an XML schema? One big reason is that it allows you to strongly type your XML columns - in other words, it forces users/developers to save documents that match the format you require.

A good basic example for those who don't already know how to do this in SQL Server.

Eric Beser on 12/3/2008
Should show updating of data as well as inserting data. Otherwise excellent video

Very hard to see the screen content - took almost 2/3 the length of the video to zoom, resize, etc to even see still-fuzzy content.

Nice and informative. I wish to see a video around 10 to 15 minutes long so a little bit deeper and wider coverage can be provided.

Very good - I've learnt a lot. I quite like the fact that you can define the format of the expected data and thus prevent a lot of errors.

Dennis Wetherall on 3/15/2011
You are a great teacher! Thanks.

I had to watch it twice to catch everything, and pause several times, but excellent information.

VERY FAST AND SHORT

Question... Is there a way to send in extra tags that might not be defined in the XML schema? Like a table sent in that has extra columns that can be ignored? I only want to validate the columns received in the XML. I primarily am using XML Schema for performance reasons.

Awesome!!!

Look so much like a database table, when would you use an XML schema over a database

matt shea on 6/8/2011
very clear

Steve Harris on 6/9/2011
need more explanation about xml and how to access it

Eric on 1/11/2012
Loved it! Well-prepared, well-rehearsed, and packed with information! I have little XML in SQL Server experience, so I definitely want to try your example. Where can I find the T-SQL that was shown in the video? ericbragas@yahoo.com
