Insert Statement Operators
It doesn't seem like an INSERT should be complicated, yet it's very common to see CONSTANT, COMPUTE SCALAR, and INDEX SEEK within the plan for an insert. What does all that mean and why does it happen? SQL book author Grant Fritchey has a great demo that illustrates and explains all of them.

I'm currently working for FM Global, an industry leading engineering & insurance company, as a DBA. I've done development of large scale applications in languages such as VB, C# and Java. I've worked in SQL Server from the hoary days of 6.0. My nickname at work is the "The Scary DBA." I even have an official name plate with it. I wear it proudly. I was awarded a Microsoft MVP in April of '09.

Great, quick explanation why an insert statement has so much other "stuff" in the query execution plan.

While one cannot expect much from a clipping that is less than 2 minutes, it would have been more condign if the presenter had either made the concept more clearer in two snippets or extend the current one. For example what would 'Assert' actually mean and its implications... The presenter had been forced to skim over important aspects of query analysis that would be of great help to any learner about the basic internals of the query optimizer and the execution plan it comes up with...Just a thought!
