Confio Ignite 8

Views, Indexed Views, and NOEXPAND

Views are a nice abstraction layer, letting us re-use a query multiple times in multiple ways. Indexing them is a way to pay for the work of executing that query up front instead of when we query it. It comes with a cost, but the pay off can be big. Enterprise Edition automatically figures indexed views into it's optimization process, but on Standard you have to tell it do that by adding in the NOEXPAND hint to your query. We've got a longer than usual video that tries to show you enough about each of these concepts to show you how they work together.

Love it... very well done.

Top notch. I appreciate the extra detail of pointing out that an indexed view is like having a set of triggers on the source table(s) which build a table for the view.

Hi Andy, This is really a great video with lots of details which even a regulat SQL professional might be missing on. I got some questions on similar case scenarios. Is there any email ID you can be reached at? Thanks

excellent demo

Excellent summary of Views and Clustered Indexes. I would LOVE a follow-up to this to talk about SQL wizard to know what Views/Clustered indexes should be created based on existing SQL performance!

Would it be possible to have access to the code?

Superb video for developers, in terms of performance tuning.

Why do the number of reads decrease on subsequent executions that use the indexed view (unique clustered index or the non-clustered index)? Are those reads from pages in memory? I'd appreciate an answer, or where to look for one. Thanks. DrDianaDee@verizon.net
