Takes Query Plan Analysis and Performance Monitoring to a New Level

Options for Displaying Query Results in SSMS

Most of use the default setting of displaying the results of a query in a grid and it works well. Do you know how to get the data from there into Excel? Or have you experimented with the options to display as text, to automatically display results in a different tab, or even send the results directly to a file? It's worth 10 minutes of experimenting to learn what all the options are and find out not just which ones work best for you on a day to day basis, but which ones you might use in different situations.

Really liked this one. Packed with good information and several options I hadn't thought to try.

Mark Hathaway on 11/18/2010
Maybe you already know this, but if you select output results to text, you can actually click into the result set and edit it.

Jamshid Nouri on 11/18/2010
excellent demo

Excellent.

WChaster on 11/18/2010
Never looked at the option before, but I have used the copy to Excel. Does the copy to file option require SSIS?

Timothy Rupp on 11/18/2010
Excellent demo there!

Awesome.. never thought that this feature would be available... I was using Copy-Paste option to Excel and then formatting the data as per requirement

I've got to admit that when I first started to watch this video I thought, "Man, how old hat." But then I was surprised at how much I learned. I wasn't aware of the fact that you could right click on that upper left box to get different options for saving the data. Nor was I aware of all of the options under Tools | SQL Query. Very good stuff!

very useful. Thanks!

Would like to know how to get the results to csv or txt file when the fields contain commas. There is no option to use quotes for text.

Haider on 11/19/2010
great work , keep going

Andy Warren on 11/20/2010
The output to grid has an option to quote columns, but not the output to text. Not sure why here is a difference! I don't think there are any options when you go directly to file.

Good video...if you are incredibly new to SQL Server and getting data into Excel

very nice. liked it a lot.

Great thing about results to text is for any operations that you would want feedback as it progresses rather than waiting for it to complete. IE .. Backup/Restore Great video, I may have to try the automatic second tab window.

Matthew White on 11/29/2010
Text results to csv, now why have I never used that before!! What a time saver! :)

Loren Scherbak on 12/2/2010
This was great! I watched your video on view expansion. Is it possible you can make more videos on views and views using SSMS. Thanks a lot!

Anu on 12/8/2010
Volume was too low

Eric on 12/22/2010
I've used SQL Server for years and never get around to trying out all the results formats. Thanks for saving me the time! I'll watch videos on my time off, but I won't do work, darn it!

Leon on 1/26/2011
useful. I never took the time to check the options in ssms
