Blocking, SP_Who, and SysProcesses

Today we're taking a look at diagnosing a simple case of blocking by using sp_who and sysprocesses. We'll show you how to create a simple blocking scenario that emulates a long running query, and then we'll "fix" the problem by issuing a KILL statement so that other the blocked queries can run to completion.

The sound was too low, had to turn speaker all the way up just to hear adequately.

I would like to see more about blocking. For investigating what to do in a block, in addition to looking at who created the blocking process, I look at how long it has been running and IO and CPU and finally DBCC INPUTBUFFER to see what sort activity it is and perhaps a quick debug to see if there is a problem. This also leads into the query hint NOLOCK in the cases where the blocked process is a simple query where a NOLOCK result set is acceptable to get them moving forward and working again.

This video is good because I rarely have to deal with blocking issues, and get out of practice. Thanks for the refresher. I would another video on sp_who/sp_who2, this one that deals with the different result values in the columns, like "WAITING," "BUSY", etc.

We recently had a production issue where blocking cost us a lot of time. As a result we discussed the need for out Data Integration team to gain a better understanding of blocking and SQL Server commands to research. This video will be very helpful to our team.
